Spotlight: Patents Beyond the Lawyers

Date: Wednesday, February 17, 2010
Time: 4-5:30pm
Location: Foege N130

Patents beyond the lawyers–informing your research through
understanding of patent landscapes

Patents are not just for the lawyers. Understanding the patent landscape of
your field can inform or even guide your research by exploring novel
applications for your idea. Join us with speaker Dr. Scott Gilbert, a
licensed patent agent and research scientist, as he talks us through the key
elements of patents every scientist and inventor should know. Come and learn
the skills necessary to translate the legal jargon of a patent in order to
understand the core science, when and who to contact about protecting your
ideas, and the value of a quality patent search to your research and
entrepreneurial endeavors.

Scott Gilbert: Crystal Vision Microsystems Founder
Scott Gilbert has been a research scientist since 1993 at the Swiss Federal
Institute of Technology in Lausanne, Switzerland. In 2001, Scott founded
Crystal Vision Microsystems, a start-up developing lab-on-chip solutions for
the chemical and pharmaceutical process industries. His path and business
associations took him to the UW, where he is currently a visiting scholar
with the Center for Process Analytical Chemistry (CPAC) in the Departments
of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. In addition to research here at UW,
he is working with UW TechTransfer to perform patentability and other
searches and analyses for potential patent applicants.

4th Annual Science & Technology Showcase

Date: Thursday, January 14, 2010
Time: 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.
Location: HUB 200ABC

Thinking about entering the Business Plan Competition or the Environmental Innovation Challenge this year? The time to start forming your teams is creeping upon us. If you want to round out your IDEA? You’ve got a few, but you’d really like to meet someone in biomaterials or computer science or radiology or chemistry who’s working on some cool piece of technology that could solve a Big Problem.

HOW?? Cross-campus networking can be tough. But NOT THIS TIME! PROBLEM SOLVED! The Science & Technology Showcase brings together students from across campus (business, science, engineering, medicine, law etc.) and prominent business people from around the community for a night celebrating research with commercial potential done right here at UW.

Students from science and engineering will exhibit their research posters and a panel of Seattle’s leading venture capitalists will judge the entries. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three technologies.

TO REPEAT: Why should you attend?

• Find team members for the Business Plan Competition or for the Environmental Innovation Challenge

• Meet students from other disciplines and learn about the technologies they’re developing.

• Food and drinks will be provided.

This event is co-hosted by the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) and the Science and Engineering Business Association (SEBA).
